Salary ↔ Hourly Converter — Canada 2026 (with after-tax estimate)

How it works

Salary to hourly: hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year). Hourly to salary runs the same formula backwards. The part most converters skip is the after-tax step: two offers with the same gross pay can keep different amounts depending on your province, and an hourly offer with no paid vacation is worth less than it looks — if you take 3 weeks unpaid, use 49 weeks, not 52.

Worked example

A $70,000 salary at 37.5 hours a week over 52 weeks is $70,000 ÷ 1,950 hours = $35.90 an hour before tax. In Ontario in 2026 that salary keeps about $53,786 after tax, CPP and EI (see the province page for the full breakdown) — roughly $27.58 per working hour in your pocket. Comparing a job offer? Frequently asked questions

How many work hours are in a year?

At 37.5 hours a week it is 1,950 hours; at 40 hours a week it is 2,080. Canadian full-time roles commonly use one of the two — check your offer letter.

Should I use 52 weeks if I get paid vacation?

Yes. Paid vacation means you are paid for all 52 weeks. Reduce the weeks only for unpaid time off, seasonal work or contract gaps.

Does the hourly rate include overtime?

No. Overtime (typically 1.5× after 44 hours a week in Ontario, with different rules by province) is extra and is taxed as regular income when paid.

RRSP Calculator — Canada 2026

How it works

An RRSP contribution is a deduction: it lowers your taxable income dollar for dollar, so the tax you save is roughly the contribution × your marginal tax rate — with an important catch. If the contribution is large enough to push you down through a bracket, part of it is refunded at the lower rate. This calculator does it properly: it runs the full 2026 tax engine twice, once at your salary and once at your salary minus the contribution, and the difference is your estimated refund (which may arrive as a bigger refund or a smaller balance owing).

Worked example

On a $70,000 Ontario salary, a $5,000 RRSP contribution saves about $1,483 of tax in 2026 — an effective refund rate of 29.65%, matching the combined federal (20.5%) + Ontario (9.15%) marginal rate at that income. Invested at 5% for 25 years, that single $5,000 contribution grows to about $16,932 before withdrawal tax.

The 2026 rules that matter

New room: 18% of last year’s earned income, up to the 2026 dollar limit of $33,810, minus any pension adjustment, plus unused room carried forward. Your exact limit is on your Notice of Assessment and in CRA My Account.
Deadline: contributions in the first 60 days of the year can be claimed on the prior year’s return.
Withdrawals are taxed as income in the year you take the money out (withholding tax applies at withdrawal; the return settles the difference).

Frequently asked questions

Is the RRSP refund “free money”?

No — it is a tax deferral. You get tax back now, but withdrawals in retirement are fully taxable. The RRSP wins when your retirement tax rate is lower than today’s.

What if I contribute more than my room?

There is a $2,000 lifetime grace amount; beyond that, excess contributions are penalized 1% per month until removed. Check your Notice of Assessment before contributing a large lump sum.

Does this calculator know my personal RRSP room?

No — and no website can. Your room is personal and held by the CRA. We show the 2026 limits and the tax math; confirm your room in CRA My Account.

TFSA Calculator — Contribution Room & Growth, 2026

Estimate only — not tax or financial advice. Room estimate assumes you were resident in Canada every year from age 18 and uses CRA annual dollar limits. The CRA’s figure in My Account is official — financial institutions report contributions with a lag, so keep your own records. Source: CRA TFSA limits.

How TFSA room works

Every year you are 18 or older and resident in Canada, you gain the year’s TFSA dollar limit — $7,000 for 2026. Unused room carries forward forever, and money you withdraw is added back to your room on January 1 of the following year. Someone who was already 18 and resident in 2009, when the TFSA launched, and has never contributed has $109,000 of cumulative room in 2026. Growth inside the account and withdrawals are completely tax-free, and withdrawals do not affect income-tested benefits like OAS or GIS.

Worked example

Turned 18 in 2015? Your cumulative room by 2026 is the sum of the annual limits from 2015 to 2026 — $78,000. If you have contributed $20,000 lifetime and never withdrawn, your available room is about $58,000. A $7,000 contribution invested at 5% for 20 years grows to about $18,572 — and every cent can come out tax-free.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I over-contribute?

The excess is taxed at 1% per month until it is withdrawn. This is the most common TFSA mistake — usually caused by re-contributing a withdrawal in the same calendar year. See TFSA Contribution Room: Common Mistakes.

Can I have more than one TFSA?

Yes, but your room is shared across all of them. The limit applies to you, not to each account.

Does TFSA room depend on income?

No. Unlike the RRSP, TFSA room is the same for everyone in a given year, regardless of earnings.

Canadian Mortgage Calculator — CMHC Insurance & Stress Test, 2026

Estimate only — not mortgage or financial advice. Canadian mortgages compound semi-annually by law; payments here use that convention. CMHC premium uses standard CMHC Purchase rates for a traditional down payment and is added to the loan; provincial sales tax on the premium (charged in ON, QC and SK) is payable in cash at closing and is not included. Insured mortgages (under 20% down) are capped at a $1.5M purchase price and normally a 25-year amortization (30 years for eligible first-time buyers and new builds). Lender approval uses the stress test plus GDS/TDS debt-service ratios. Sources: CMHC premium tables; OSFI Guideline B-20.

How it works

Step 1 — minimum down payment. 5% of the first $500,000 of the price, plus 10% of the portion between $500,000 and $1,500,000. At $1,500,000 or more, 20% down is required and mortgage insurance is not available.

Step 2 — CMHC insurance. With less than 20% down, default insurance is mandatory and the premium is added to your mortgage: 4.00% of the loan at 90.01–95% loan-to-value, 3.10% at 85.01–90%, 2.80% at 80.01–85% (plus 0.20% if amortization exceeds 25 years). At 20%+ down there is no premium.

Step 3 — the payment. Canadian fixed rates compound semi-annually, so the monthly rate is (1 + annual ÷ 2)^2/12 − 1. The payment then follows the standard amortization formula over your chosen frequency.

Step 4 — the stress test. You must qualify at the greater of your contract rate + 2% or 5.25%. The calculator shows the payment at the qualifying rate — that is the payment your lender tests against the 39% GDS / 44% TDS limits.

Worked example

A $650,000 home with $65,000 (10%) down: the mortgage before insurance is $585,000. At 90% loan-to-value the CMHC premium is 3.10% = $18,135, making a total mortgage of $603,135. At 4.50% over 25 years the monthly payment is about $3,338. The stress-test qualifying rate is 6.50% (4.50 + 2 beats the 5.25% floor), where the payment would be about $4,040 — the figure the lender uses to qualify you.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my lender’s payment slightly different?

Rounding of the rate conversion, the exact payment frequency (accelerated bi-weekly is different from regular bi-weekly), and whether the CMHC premium’s sales tax is financed all move the figure by a few dollars. The method — semi-annual compounding — is the Canadian standard.

Can I avoid CMHC insurance?

Yes: put 20% or more down. The premium is one reason saving the extra down payment can be worth it — on the example above it saves $18,135 plus the interest on it.

What are GDS and TDS?

Gross Debt Service (housing costs ÷ gross income, limit ~39%) and Total Debt Service (all debt payments ÷ gross income, limit ~44%), tested at the qualifying rate. See CMHC Insurance and the Stress Test, Explained.

Rent vs Buy Calculator — Canada

Estimate only — not financial advice. Compares net worth outcomes using your assumptions. Buying costs include an estimated 1.5% closing cost and CMHC premium if under 20% down; selling costs 5%. Rent is assumed to rise 2% a year. The renter invests the down payment plus any monthly cash-flow difference. Real results depend on markets, taxes (principal-residence exemption assumed for the home; investment returns untaxed in this simple model) and your actual costs.

How it works

The honest comparison is net worth at the end of your stay. Buying: your equity is the home’s future value minus the remaining mortgage and selling costs. Renting: your portfolio is the down payment you kept invested, plus each month’s cash-flow difference between owning costs (mortgage payment + owner costs) and rent, also invested. Whichever pile is bigger wins — under your assumptions, which is why the growth and return inputs matter more than the verdict.

Worked example

A $650,000 home, 20% down, 4.5% mortgage, $2,600 rent, 7-year stay, 3% home growth and 5% investment returns: buying leaves roughly $322,800 of net equity after closing and selling costs, while renting and investing leaves roughly $295,000 — buying ahead by about $27,800. Shorten the stay to 3 years and closing/selling costs usually flip the answer to renting. Try your own horizon above.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the time horizon change everything?

Buying has large one-time costs at both ends (land transfer tax, legal, CMHC, selling commissions). Spread over 3 years they swamp the equity build-up; over 10+ years they fade and principal repayment dominates.

What costs do renters forget?

Rent increases, moving costs, and the discipline assumption: the model only works if the renter actually invests the difference every month.

What costs do buyers forget?

Property tax, insurance, maintenance and repairs (budget roughly 1–2% of the home’s value a year combined), plus land transfer tax at purchase — doubled in Toronto.

Self-Employment Tax Estimator — Canada 2026

Estimate only — not tax or financial advice. For an unincorporated sole proprietor with only self-employment income. Self-employed Canadians pay both the employee and employer shares of CPP (11.90% total, plus 8% CPP2 tier) — half is a deduction and the rest earns a credit, which this estimator models. No EI (self-employed EI is opt-in for special benefits). Does not include GST/HST collection or instalment interest. Source: CRA 2026.

How it works

As a sole proprietor, your business profit is taxed as personal income — same federal and provincial brackets — with three big differences from an employee. 1) CPP is doubled: you pay both halves, 11.90% on earnings between $3,500 and $74,600 in 2026 (maximum $8,460.90), plus 8% on the CPP2 band to $85,000 (maximum $832). The employer half is a deduction from income; the employee half earns a non-refundable credit. 2) No EI unless you opt in for special benefits (parental, sickness) — you cannot collect regular EI on lost work. 3) No employer withholds tax, so the CRA will usually require quarterly instalments once your net tax owing exceeds $3,000 ($1,800 in Quebec).

Worked example

On $70,000 of net self-employment income in Ontario in 2026, this estimator shows roughly $7,914 of CPP (both halves), about $10,175 of combined income tax after the CPP deduction and credits, and take-home of roughly $51,912 — a “set aside” share of about 26% of every dollar. How much should I set aside from each payment?

Use the percentage this calculator gives you at your expected annual income, and sweep it to a separate savings account with every invoice paid. Recheck mid-year — CPP maxes out partway through the year at higher incomes, which lowers your marginal set-aside later in the year.

When do I have to register for GST/HST?

Once your taxable revenue passes $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters, registration is mandatory. Many register voluntarily earlier to claim input tax credits.

Should I incorporate?

Incorporation can defer tax when you earn well above what you need to live on, but adds accounting and legal costs. That decision needs a professional with your full picture — this estimator covers the unincorporated case.

Where the 2026 rates come from

Federal brackets, the basic personal amount and the Canada employment amount: Canada Revenue Agency, “Canadian income tax rates for individuals — current and previous years” and the CRA indexation announcement for 2026. Payroll rates and maximums (CPP, CPP2, EI): CRA payroll deductions formulas T4127 and tables T4032 for 2026. Provincial and territorial brackets and basic personal amounts: CRA provincial/territorial tax pages and provincial finance ministries. Quebec pension and parental plan rates (QPP, QPIP): Retraite Québec and Revenu Québec. Mortgage insurance premiums: CMHC premium tables. Stress test (minimum qualifying rate): OSFI Guideline B-20 and the Department of Finance rules for insured mortgages. RRSP/TFSA limits: CRA registered plans limits table. Rates on this page were verified for the 2026 tax year in November 2026.

How the tax engine calculates

Payroll deductions first: CPP at 5.95% of pensionable earnings between the $3,500 exemption and the $74,600 YMPE (maximum $4,230.45), plus CPP2 at 4% between $74,600 and $85,000 (maximum $416); EI at 1.63% to $68,900 of insurable earnings (maximum $1,123.07). Quebec: QPP 6.30% (maximum $4,479.30) plus QPP2, EI at the reduced 1.30% rate, and QPIP at 0.430% to $103,000.
Taxable income = income − your deductions (e.g. RRSP) − the enhanced portion of CPP/QPP contributions, which is deductible (the base portion earns a credit instead).
Federal and provincial bracket tax is calculated slice by slice, then non-refundable credits (basic personal amount, Canada employment amount, base CPP/QPP and EI/QPIP amounts) are subtracted at each jurisdiction’s lowest rate. Quebec residents receive the 16.5% federal abatement. Ontario adds its surtax (20% of Ontario tax over $5,818 plus 36% over $7,446) and the Ontario Health Premium.

What the engine leaves out

Basic credits only. Not modelled: age and pension amounts, tuition, medical and charitable credits, Ontario’s low-income tax reduction (LIFT), BC’s tax reduction credit, Manitoba’s basic personal amount phase-down at very high incomes, income splitting, capital gains and dividend gross-ups, and employer-specific deductions. Results are estimates for planning; your Notice of Assessment is the official figure.
